Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH), a Washington-based medical ethics group, has urged the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to demand that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) end its illegal organ harvesting practices and allow independent investigations regarding forced organ harvesting.
This plea came ahead of Bachelet’s planned trip to China later this month.
In a press release, the group stated: “Forced organ harvesting from living people specifically to sell their organs for profitable transplant surgeries is among the most egregious crimes against humanity conceivable.”
The group raised the brutal persecution of Falun Gong in 2006. Falun Gong was a peaceful spiritual discipline that follows the principles of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. The discipline, also known as Falun Dafa, has meditative exercises and moral teachings, and it grew in popularity in the 1990s, leading up to 100 million people practicing it in China by the end of the decade.
Perceiving this as a threat, the Chinese regime launched a nationwide campaign in 1999 seeking to eradicate the practice. Millions of Falun Gong practitioners were detained in jails and detention facilities across the country, where they are subjected to torture and forced organ harvesting. A plethora of research, investigation and testimony about Beijing’s organ transplant abuses has emerged since 2006. DAFOH said all of these have been reviewed by an independent panel called the China Tribunal in 2019.
The London-based panel also concluded that the Chinese regime had been harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience for years. These organs were used for transplant on a substantial scale, and the practice is still ongoing. These actions amount to crimes against humanity, with the main victims being the detained Falun Gong practitioners.
After considering a variety of written and oral evidence that included testimony from over 50 witnesses given over two public hearings, tribunal chair Sir Geoffrey Nice QC said in the judgment on June 17, 2019: “The conclusion shows that very many people have died indescribably hideous deaths for no reason, [and] that more may suffer in similar ways.”
A whistleblower reported instances of forcible organ removal for profit in 2006. The woman, using the pseudonym Annie, said her ex-husband was a Chinese neurosurgeon who had personally removed the corneas of 2,000 Falun Gong prisoners in a hospital in Shenyang City from 2001 to 2003.
She said the organs removed from a living human being fetch a much higher price than from a dead body. “After the live organ removal, some Falun Gong practitioners were still alive and breathing, but some of their bodies were directly thrown into the crematory oven. No trace of their bodies is left.”
The same year, an independent investigation by former Canadian Secretary of State David Kilgour and Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas concluded that there had been large-scale organ seizures from unwilling Falun Gong practitioners.
Their report pointed out that there had been an uptick in organ transplant surgeries conducted in China since 2000, with unusually short wait times as advertised by hospitals, at a time when the country has no formal organ donation system. Before 2015, the Chinese regime also said organs for transplants were sourced from executed prisoners.
The Chinese regime has continued denying allegations of organ harvesting and has maintained since 2015 that organ transplants have come from voluntary donors. (Related: Relative of Shanghai-based doctor reveals details about China’s live organ harvesting program.)
China is still refusing to allow outside access to medical and detention facilities for other parties to probe the matter.
DAFOH called attention to a recent resolution adopted by the European Parliament, which expressed serious concerns about “persistent, systematic, inhumane and state-sanctioned organ harvesting from prisoners in the People’s Republic of China, and, more specifically, from Falun Gong practitioners and other minorities such as Uyghurs, Tibetans and Christians.”
This resolution further called for the Chinese regime to cooperate with U.N. organizations on the matter, and for the Human Rights Council to deal with the issue and take it as a matter of priority.
DAFOH organized a global petition to the High Commissioner for Human Rights between 2012 and 2018, demanding that the U.N. call upon China to immediately stop the forced organ harvesting program and to conduct further investigations into the matter. Over three million people from 50 countries and regions signed the petition.
